Sales Bring Hundreds To Newbern Each Friday

The Newbern Sales Company has been purchased by two local men, David Via and Harry Rose. Started in 1936 by Brown Flowers and Ed Brammer, the ·sales company has grown through years to be one of the best in this section of the South.

The firm was sold by the original owners in 1942 to Elton Holland, Franklin Parnell, M.G. Burkett and Jimmy Wilson. It was owned and. operated by them until recently purchased by Via and Rose.

David, age 29, a graduate of Newbern High School worked at the sales company during his high school days. He was associated with the Delta Packing Company as a Cattle Buyer from 1960 to 1964 in Hernando, Mississippi.

About two years ago, he returned to Newbern and purchased the L.D. Newsome farm on Biffle road where he and his family reside. The son of Mr. and Mrs. Ben Via of Atwood, David is married to the former Miss Patty Thurman of Dyersburg. They have one son, Jeff, age three months , He is a member of the Newbern Jaycees and the Oakview Country Club. The Via's are members of the First Baptist Church in Newbern.

Harry Rose; age 41. is a graduate of Trimble High. School. He has been associated with the company he and David purchased for the past fifteen years and has also been an active farmer in the area. . He is married to the former Miss Betty Jane Gregory. They have four children: Mike, age 17, Steve, IS, Phyllis, age 13, and Lisa age 5. The Rose’s country home is near Tatumville.

According to Rose, the sales company employs about 32 persons and holds cattle sales every Friday when some twelve to fifteen hundred persons attend the sale. Buyers from a dozen or more major meat producers are on hand at every sale. Sales commission receipts show that sales at the firm total about $4 million each year.

Located on Parks Street, the new owners have said no change in personnel is planned. The Hog Sales business across from the Newbern Sales Company is still owned and will continue it's same operation by the owners, Elton Holland and Franklin Parnell.

Prior to being destroyed by fire in the 1980’s Newbern Sales Company was the largest livestock sales facility in West-Tennessee excluding Shelby County. Shipping was done by truck, train and private carrier.

Newbern Sales Company “The Sale Barn” was located on the current site of Tri County Equipment Company. At the rear of the facility were holding pens for livestock.
