If you would like to be a vendor, participate in the Miss Depot Days pageant, golf tournament, or be a part of the Depot Days race, on Saturday, Sept. 16th, go to the Depot Days website at www.newberndepotdays.org.
Among the items to be given away this year at Depot Days will be five $100 drawings, one $500 drawing at the end of the event, an Amtrak ride for two on the "City of New Orleans" train, to either Chicago, or New Orleans (winner's choice), along with many other prizes. It was 25 years ago that a group of citizens, headed up by Newbern Mayor Joe Adams, created this festival, in order to promote and preserve the 1920 - built depot. The city of Newbern had purchased it two years earlier, when the Illinois Central Railroad, which built the depot, informed the city they would be tearing it down.
Since then, the depot was saved from destruction, and now houses a railroad and city history museum, an Amtrak waiting room, and a freight room on the north end, which can be rented for special events.
