NEWBERN BOARD OF MAYOR AND ALDERMEN

The Newbern Board of Mayor and Aldermen met in regular session in the Board Meeting Room at the Newbern Municipal Building. Mayor Olen K. Parker presiding. Aldermen present were Vice Mayor John Flatt, Robert Hart, Justin Wright, Daniel Watson, Kirby Ogden and Bradley Rogers. Also present were City Recorder Jason Roberts, Office Manager Cindy Reed, and Police Chief Red Barnes.

Our Second Safe Room is now under construction. The facility will house the City Courtroom and the 911 operations for Newbern and Dyer County.

Approval to provide Service for the Carson and Barnes Circus which is planning to return to Newbern the end of September in conjunction with Depot Days.

The Downtown Enhancement Grant has passed the halfway point and appears to be running ahead of schedule.

Depot News - August 2016Depot Days prep is in full swing. It will be Saturday, Sept. 17th, for the main events this year, with a golf tournament on Saturday, Sept. 24th, and a possible beauty review on Saturday, Sept. 10th. The review was still in the planning process as of this writing, and we have no confirmation about it yet.

We will be letting the Bids on the 2nd Safe Room in the near future. The first bids were over budget and required some alterations. Some additional funding has been appropriated and the facility will be constructed as originally planned. The facility will house the City Courtroom and the 911 operations for Newbern and Dyer County.

From Days Past - July 2016This information being taken from a book written by Arahwana Hendren Ridens named the Dyer County and Newbern Tennessee, A history of the 39 earliest families in Dyer County. Part of this information was extracted from this publication, along with other documents and related stories and oral family histories. We continue with the entries of the McCorkle Diaries and what was entered about the from his perspective as a Newbern business owner. We pick up late in the year of 1889 and continue from our June 2016 issue.

Congratulations to Rocky Foster on your retirement from the Newbern Police Department! Rocky served the City of Newbern for 19 years. Thank you for all your hard work and dedication to the citizens of Newbern.

The Newbern T-Ball All-Stars placed second in the Cal Ripken State Tournament in Huntingdon this past weekend, placing as runner-up in the nine-team field.

Depot News - July 2016On June 24, the Canadian National Railroad safety train "Little Obie" came to the Newbern Depot for the first time. The train is designed to promote railroad safety, and was to be accompanied by a safety video, and talk, in the freight room, but this had to be cancelled at the last minute. About 250 people came out on a Friday morning to see, and ride Little Obie.
